Jason Moran’s exhibition Bathing the Room With Blues includes images from Colorado’s storied history in jazz. Join research librarian Terry Nelson, from Denver’s Blair Caldwell African American Research Library, as she shares stories from the city’s Five Points neighborhood in MCA's rooftop cafe/bar. Then, stay for a tour of the exhibition with Miranda Lash, MCA Denver’s Ellen Bruss Senior Curator, followed by an exclusive jazz performance with the Purnell Steen Trio in Jason Moran’s Three Deuces installation.

ABOUT THE GUESTS

Charleszine "Terry" Nelson

Charleszine “Terry” Nelson is the special collection and community resource manager for the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library. With 30 years of Library experience, Nelson has been a bookmobile librarian, manager of the library film center, a reference and humanities librarian, and was the manager of Volunteer Services for the Denver Public Library. She is also the co-author (with Bonnie F. McCune) of Recruiting and Managing Volunteers in Libraries, which has become a valuable manual for managers of volunteer programs throughout the nation. Born and raised in Denver, Nelson attended Manual High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a master’s degree in Information Technology and Library Science from Emporia State College.

Purnell Steen

Thankfully the Five Points sound is still alive today, and the main keeper of the flame is pianist Purnell Steen. Steen is a consummate performer who has a legion of devoted fans in his native Denver. Steen is also part of a musical dynasty, with relatives including vocalist Dianne Reeves, pianist George Duke, saxophonist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, and bassist Charlie Burrell.
