A ten-year survey of the artist’s work, Brian Bress: Make Your Own Friends includes a selection of videos and, for the first time, presents them alongside his sculpture and works on paper. The exhibition highlights the artist’s unique process that often migrates from two dimensions to three and back again. Bress’s imaginative characters are born as doodles or collages, take shape as sculptural costumes, and come to life on video, often performed in front of elaborately composed backdrops. Bress’s “friends” imaginatively breach disciplinary boundaries amongst painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, and video.
The catalogue includes essays by the exhibition's joint curators: Nora Burnett Abrams, Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and Whitney Tassie, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Brian Bress: Make Your Own Friendswas on view at MCA Denver in 2016.
